Light the flame of intelligence at the root of the body by unlocking the most important Hatha Yoga practice
Mula Bandha is perhaps the most important practice to be cultivated in Hatha Yoga. However, it is equally the most illusive and frustrating! There is often much talk about “engaging your mula bandha” or “squeezing your anus”, but with very little accompanying explanation about what that actually means!
Inviting Mula Bandha into the seat of the body involves conjoining complementary movement patterns, which in turn opens up the mid-line of the body, right up through to the soft palate.
Mula Bandha is cultivated and practiced in asana, pranayama and sitting practices, and it lays the foundation for a strong and fluid inner core unit.
Beyond the spiritual and psycho-emotional benefits of Mula Bandha it is also has a very practical everyday uses, awakening as it does the body’s natural intelligence and healing memory. Correct practice of Mula Bandha will correct habitual postural imbalances, stimulate healthy abdominal organ function (particularly digestion), support full and free breathing, improve sexual vitality and a establish a fully supported and health spine.
This session will explore the deep sensations that form the experience we describe as Mula Bandha. Listening carefully throughout, we will move through practices specifically designed to awaken the central axis of the body. Emphasising and the strong grounding effect of correct ujjayi breath, we will flow seamlessly through these movement patterns, following the thread of the central axis itself.
