Adjusting Yoga Poses (with Dynamic Alignment)

YOGABEYOND® 40hr Modular CPD Training, w/ Chris Croft

Learn how to safely and intelligently adjust yoga poses using applied dynamic alignment principles

Adjusting or assisting a student should never be about forcing or cranking them into a pose. An effective yoga adjustment communicates the dynamic energetic component of a pose through intuitive touch, helping awareness travel through the body and allowing the student to overcome mental and physical ‘knots’. Giving intelligent and dynamic yoga adjustments is an ‘art’ which requires confidence, subtlety and an understanding of the mechanics of the body. Receiving an adjustment is just as important, as it teaches us trust, develops bodily awareness and requires both surrender and the confidence to say “NO”.

Dynamic Alignment

A truly intelligent assist/adjustment requires a dynamic understanding of pose alignment as an expression of the body-breath relationship. By exploring and understanding the subtle internal movements of the breath, and its inseparable relationship to external form patterns, we develop a dynamic toolkit of skills we refer to as Dynamic Alignment.

Rather than a rigid checklist of external do’s and don’t Dynamic Alignment is a set of alignment principles that are internally felt and individually adaptive. Rather than regurgitating a generic verbal cue, or giving every student the same adjustment for a pose, Dynamic Alignment principles enable you to give each individual student what they actually need.

The result is that, as a teacher, you can teach the student, not the pose!

The Training

This special 4-part modular training course blends hands-on exploration with theory, demonstration and anatomy to cultivate a deeper experience and understanding of foundation poses, hip-openers, forward bends, backbends, twists, arm balances and inversions.

Each in-depth and fun-filled day can be attended as a stand-alone 1-day workshop or as part of the accredited YOGABEYOND® 40hr Adjusting Yoga Poses CPD Training, which also includes a 60-page training manual.

These workshops are perfect for yoga teachers, teachers-in-training & regular students seeking to deepen their experience and understanding.

Testimonials

"A huge thank you for your guidance and sharing your incredible knowledge in such an open and engaging way during the course. It was truly eye opening and really reinstated confidence that has been lost or confused on my teaching journey. Not only did I gain tips and tools to integrate into a class space but it also re-inspired my own personal practice and reminded me of why I wanted to train in the first place, to teach sure, but most of all to learn. What a wonderful thing to have discovered Exeter Yoga Workshop!"
Ella
"The workshop was fantastic, I enjoy having my conditioning challenged and exploring how it affects my practice and my teaching. It was also very interesting to hear you talk about holding someone in a space they don't want to be in. Thank you again, I will be back for more whenever I can"
Lucy
"The perfect workshop! Chris explained everything really well, im pleased to be able to go to another one of these modules. Chris knows what he's talking about and answered every question well with both facts and his own personal opinion. Well spent money!"
Ulrika
"Thanks for such a great workshop! I thought it was very well structured, professional, clearly taught, and your knowledge & experience were very apparent throughout - I'm sure everyone felt they were in very good hands. I'm sure I'll come to more in future - it was excellent!"
Tanja
"One of the many magical moments I will take away with me from the weekend is how you become an extension of someone else's posture by helping them with adjustment. It was an incredible experience shared with truly incredible people."
Hayley
"Like all the most brilliant teachers, Chris gently throws a hand grenade into your long-standing practice and helps you reconstruct the pieces into something excitingly new. All done with humour, insight and compassion. More please!"
Janet
"One is never too old to have a life-changing experience; Chris Croft is an inspiring teacher and supportive guide! Brilliant workshop"
Julie
"I particularly enjoyed exploring the poses from an individual perspective rather than just that of participants with a view to adjusting them. You gave a whole new dimension to pretty much every pose that we looked at and I've come away with a completely new attitude to my own practise that I'm excited to explore. Having been traditionally Ashtanga trained in India I was definitely stuck within the rigidity of the "rules" and it's incredibly refreshing to look beyond the rules, its completely changed Yoga for me - in the most delicious way!! You're a truly inspiring instructor"
